On the First Monday of every May, the stars align for an evening of glamour, high fashion, and artistic excellence in the world of costume and design.
This year was no exception, as the talk of town made their way down the halls of of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to pay homage and honor to one of the most celebrated fashion designers of the 20th century, Karl Lagerfeld.

The Costume Institute's Spring 2023 exhibit features the iconic designs of Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019), showcasing his signature styles and creative process. The display includes around 150 pieces with Lagerfeld's sketches, highlighting his collaborations with head seamstresses.
Lagerfeld's visionary designs for Balmain, Patou, Chloé, Fendi, Chanel, and his own label will be presented, revealing his diverse and prolific fashion legacy.
The Met Gala, also known as the Costume Institute Benefit, is an exclusive annual fundraising event that brings together some of the biggest names in fashion, entertainment, and culture.
Since its inception in 1948, the Met Gala has grown in popularity and has become a cultural phenomenon in recent years. The event is now known for its extravagant and avant-garde red carpet looks, which are often designed exclusively for the occasion by top fashion designers. This year’s 2023 theme honored Karl Lagerfeld, legendary fashion designer and photographer known for his innovative work in the fashion industry.
As the creative director of Chanel and Fendi, he designed haute couture and ready-to-wear collections that blended classic styles with modern elements. Lagerfeld's iconic personal style, including his signature white ponytail, dark sunglasses, and high-collared shirts, was widely celebrated, and was featured predominately on the MET Gala’s iconic Stairway to Heaven.
Considered one of the most important and influential figures in fashion, Lagerfeld was not without controversy, known for making derogatory comments and questionable design choices. He was known to make casual fat phobic comments on women’s body weight and color, and was called out for his almost exclusive casting of white models in runway shows and campaigns.
We recognize the sensitivity around these conversations, and call on the fashion industry to take actionable strides towards greater inclusive, diversity, and equitable representation in celebrating it’s most celebrated icons, while also holding them accountable for their actions and behaviors.

Actor, screenwriter, director, and producer Michaela Coel appeared in Custom Schiaparelli Haute Couture, designed by Daniel Roseberry, to co-chair the 2023 Met Gala.
The gown was a second skin style made of sheer tulle and adorned with over 135,000 crystal beads, 26,500 mix stones, and trompe l’oeil jewelry in different shades of gold and translucent topaze.
The embroidery work was done by hand and required 3,800 hours to complete. The bijoux designs were inspired by Karl Lagerfeld's costume jewelry creations, incorporating Schiaparelli house codes, including human anatomy molded in leather and covered in gold leaf.
